The Superyacht Regatta
Before the America’s Cup Match racing begins, some of the world’s most renowned superyachts will add to the thrills in Bermuda with the America’s Cup Superyacht Regatta, part of the overall America’s Cup Superyacht Program. The Regatta takes place between June 13 to 15 on the days between the qualifiers for the Americas Cup and the final head to head Challenge for the auld mug itself, from June 17 to 27. The Superyacht Regatta 2017 is for sailing yachts with a LOA of 80 foot or greater and the racing, dependent on the weather conditions, takes place inside the Great Sound or outside on a thrilling ocean course.
One such yacht is the beautiful sloop Hyperion, built by Royal Huisman in 1998 and managed by Hill Robinson, she is a yacht of exceptional style and comfort. Competing in many of the world’s most prestigious regattas she always exhibits a quality performance. At the time of design, by German Frers, Hyperion was the largest sloop ever built with her 59 metre carbon-fibre mast also being the tallest one piece spar. During the Americas Cup event, Hyperion will be berthed in Hamilton in the heart of the America’s Cup Village at the Royal Naval Dockyard and have a front row seat to experience the racing action.
Hill Robinson’s Nick Hill, on having spent time as part of Hyperion’s regatta crew remarks, “One great thing about these regattas is the chance for the old boys to come back and compete against their likewise old adversaries, but this time in the case of Hyperion, in rather more comfortable surroundings.”
Available for charter
Hyperion’s Captain, Daniel Rawlins, believes that although the regattas she enters are tough but enjoyable work for the crew, “We learn a good deal about her at these events, which affords us the opportunity to enhance her at refit periods. Hyperion was always well engineered ever since her launch, but is a better sailing yacht because of her racing programme!” And indeed learning from her hard work on the race course has helped Hyperion to become one of the most attractive and popular sailing yachts available for charter today, though fully booked now for the Cup challenge itself, there are some slots at the event still available.
It won’t all be plain sailing though as the 55m Adela, the winner of the 2013 America’s Cup Superyacht Regatta, is back to defend her title. We wish Hyperion, and of course all the other yachts in the regatta fleet, a fair wind and good luck at the event in June.
